All Purpose Sealer J.S.Glazing Medium BRUSHES: #4, #8, & #10 Flats: LC 7350 10/0 liner PREPARATION Sand, seal painted side of heart with J.S. All Purpose Sealer. Stain the shelf and back of heart with a medium or light wood stain. Transfer the basic lines of the design. The edges on the heart and the shelf are painted with a medium value mix of French Blue and Titanium White. SCENE 1. Using a #8 or #10 flat , brush mix FB and TW and some J. S. Glazing Medium. Starting at the top of the sky begin to stroke in horizontally. Use enough glazing medium so the color is transparent. As you fill in the sky brush mix more TW into the mix, so the sky becomes lighter at the horizon. 2. Basecoat the marsh land areas with a semitransparent color of GrO and glazing medium. Shade marshes with a sideload of PGr and glazing medium. This can be done by first stroking a rather dry brush in glazing medium and then corner loading in paint. Highlight the tops of the marshes with a mix of YO and GrO and a touch of TW if needed to further lighten. Use YO and TW to create sandy beach area. 3. Base in the open ocean water with a mix of sky mix and a touch of A and ( touch of TW if needed) and glazing medium. The inlet canal water is based in with the above mix plus more TW and glazing medium. Scissor stroke in water ripples with A. Shade with a side - loaded brush of FB and SB mix. Highlight with TW. Darken shading on the ocean with SB. 4. To paint in the clouds use a #4 flat which is sideloaded with TW and glazing medium. Stroke in using loosely formed "C" strokes. 5. Base in the house and the light house with a medium value grey mix of CB and TW (approx. value 6). This should be a solid opaque basecoat. Add a little more CB to the mix to obtain a slightly darker grey ( approx. value 4) and basecoat all roofs. Lines on the houses for clapboards are done with roof mix. Shade the houses with the roof mix and highlight with the house mix plus TW using a sideloaded #8 flat brush. Linework for roof shingles and shading on the roofs is done in an even darker grey mix of roof mix and CB. Outline the bottom edges of the roofs with the dark grey mix. The windows and doors are based with CB and a touch of roof mix to give a soft black. Outline the windows and doors with TW. The shutters and chimney are based with a mix of B and a touch of CB. The linework for the blades of the windmill are done in the house mix with the center pole shaded with a line of roof mix. 6. The greenery is done with the 10/0 liner brush which is tipped in paint dabbed where ever trees and shrubs are desired. First lay in trees with PG. Shade with a mix of PG and CB. Highlight with GrO and a Touch of TW if needed. Stroke in lines for grass with PG and /or GrO. Areas of Grass become larger and heavier as you approach the foreground. 7. Seagulls are done with the grey house mix . The sailboat is TW. The dock is the grey roof mix plus a touch of YO. Flowers are dots of B and TW and a touch of grey if needed to tone. 8. Antique edges of stain ares on the shelf if desired. Complete your piece with several coats of your favorite acrylic varnish. Enjoy!
